I noticed that in the high school’s first period class, students were extremely tired, so there weren’t really any major problems, but to keep students from putting their heads done and zoning out, my CT would mention that person’s name as he reviewed the materials they learned during NECAP testing. My CT is really big on preventing disruptions from occurring. One of the examples I saw was the boy who came in late started to walk towards the seat next to his buddy, but my CT knows that those two boys will just talk the whole class, so he has that boy sit far away from his buddy. During conversations with my CT, he mentioned that he really likes to show students how to behave and act by setting examples early in the course. If a student is disrupting the class, he makes that an example of how not to act to make students less incline to do that action in the future. He takes a preventative outlook on classroom management and it shows because I have yet to really see any issues in his classroom.

In my ideal science classroom, I would have students who were excited to learn everyday and willing to participate in labs and activities. Students would come in and sit in their seats and do as they’re told, but at the same time bring creativity into the classroom. Though that won’t ever happen, I do hope to create a positive learning environment through my classroom management skills. In my classroom, I plan to have a set of rules that will be posted in the room as well as given out on a handout to students. This will give students concrete expectations and they won’t ever be surprised and say, “well I didn’t know that.” I want to implement some of the policies that my CTs have, such as work hard, be respectful to others and keep a sense of humor. I want to be able to create a classroom where students can learn and be comfortable expressing themselves. I think taking a preventative route is a good way to help manage my classroom, especially as a first time teacher, and as I learn and reflect on my practice each year, I hope to be able to anticipate problems based on similar situations. I want to also address problems when do they arise and set examples, like my CT does, since students will have a live model of what happens if they disrupt the class or break a classroom rule.
